Hypertension

Hypertension is a common medical condition characterized by persistently elevated blood pressure levels in the arteries. It is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it may not present noticeable symptoms for years while gradually damaging vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, brain, and eyes. Blood pressure is measured using two values: systolic pressure (when the heart beats) and diastolic pressure (when the heart rests). A consistent reading above normal levels indicates hypertension.

Several factors contribute to the development of hypertension, including unhealthy diet, excessive salt intake, lack of physical activity, obesity, stress, smoking, and genetic predisposition. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and vision problems.

Management of hypertension typically involves lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, reducing stress, and limiting alcohol consumption. In some cases, doctors may prescribe medications to help control blood pressure. Early diagnosis, regular monitoring, and proper treatment are essential to prevent long-term health risks and maintain overall well-being.
